Having lived and worked in the Middle East for 15 years before returning to the UK, I have first-hand understanding of the unique challenges expats face during a relationship breakdown—fear, anxiety, isolation, and the daunting reality of being “solo” in a foreign country. This lived experience allows me to support clients both locally and worldwide with genuine empathy and insight.
How I can help.
As an expat who’s been there, I understand the sacrifices, compromises, re-adaptations, compensations & the emotional strain of this dilemma—especially regarding expat clients who may have additionally experienced toxic or narcissistic behaviours. That’s why I now help clients (& the professionals who support them) navigate these life-changing events with clarity, resilience, and a plan.

															Real-life Client Scenarios: –
Below are 2 real life examples of situations clients have come to me with.
—
Lisa – “What do I do first?; I’m 4,000 miles from my home country, (living/working as an expat for 11 years), my long-term husband has suddenly said, “I don’t love you anymore,” & has left me to survive solo in a foreign country as he’s already ‘moved on’ with his new girlfriend?”
—
Debbie – “I’ve been left ‘blindsided’ & ‘decimated’; Considered the ‘golden couple’ in our social circle, 2 children, living in Dubai. Sacrificed my career and left my family in the UK for his job. He is my work ‘Sponsor,’ I only have ‘Dependent’ status. Despite this, my employer is keen for me to continue my work role. I’m not ready to return to our home country yet. The kids are happy & settled at school, have friends & attend amazing after-school extra-curricular activities. I’m not ready to give up on our lifestyle here yet. Why should WE be ‘forced’ to move back to the UK because of his recently discovered infidelities? What can I do first to start exploring my options?”

It was not unlike MY reality back in 2019—feeling both abandoned/stranded in a foreign country during the COVID lock down, helping to teach students online full-time & living alone. I grasped at any resource I could find to get through it.
Looking back, I wish I’d had my International Divorce Coach Centre of Excellence training back then-the skills, strategies, & mindset tools that now define my work as a fully qualified Breakup, Divorce, Master & Platinum Practitioner.
The following would be my top 5 key considerations and each one aligns within our IDCCOE coach training ‘Concepts’ framework:
- Immediately build a trusted support team around yourself.
- Locate and gather as many official documents as you can, e.g.’s Passports, financial/legal/property ownership statements paperwork
- Ensure you monitor your energy levels – Have nutritious food, regularly re-hydrate with water, pace yourself and get adequate sleep.
- Accept that grieving the loss of a normal relationship follows the same ‘Loss Cycle’ as that of a bereavement of a loved one. Being an expat abroad, away from your closest friends and loved ones, can be even more profoundly debilitating.
- Take daily ‘time-out’ sessions to work on your mindset, e.g.’s through breath work, by re-directing your focus – try writing a ‘Gratitude List,’ become aware of any negative words/language that you use and change them to positive words – Try turning a favourite affirmation into an ‘incantation,’ repeatedly speaking it aloud several times a day
As IDCCOE Coaches we never offer either legal or financial advice, however, we DO have the capacity to reach out to recommended experts & to signpost clients on to those who cover these areas, as we continue to support clients through their very own unique emotional roller-coasters, coupled with the initial added practical challenges that they may face as an expat left solo abroad, or having just had to return to their home countries alone.
